The collaboration aims to further implement academic research into industry applications with focus on autonomous vehicles and cognitive decline detection

A new partnership between the University of Oxford and the Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford is set to accelerate this transformation, bringing together academic expertise and industry insight to develop innovative insurance solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

The collaboration centres on the University's Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems (AIMS) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), which has been at the forefront of AI research since its inception in 2014. The Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford, a joint venture between Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance (ANDI), Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe (AND-E), and AI partner Mind Foundry, will offer AIMS students a ten-week internship opportunity to work on live AI technology projects across four key research themes: Machine Learning, Robotics and Vision, Control and Verification, and Cyber-Physical Systems.

Professor Michael Osborne, Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems, says: "This support will provide AIMS's superb students with an opportunity to both pursue cutting-edge research and to contribute meaningfully toward creating social value via digital transformation. Partnerships like this are central to AIMS and are vital in driving forward scientific development and impact".

AI-Driven Insurance Solutions

Many key players in the insurance industry are implementing AI to enhance risk assessment, claims processing, and customer experience. The Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford is at the forefront of this trend, focusing on developing tailored insurance solutions for autonomous vehicles and utilising AI to detect early signs of cognitive decline in older drivers.

These initiatives are particularly relevant in countries with ageing populations, such as Japan and the United Kingdom, where road safety for elderly drivers is a growing concern. By harnessing AI's predictive capabilities, insurers can potentially reduce road traffic fatalities and create more personalised, risk-aware policies.

Junichi Ikegami, CEO of Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford, outlines the lab's mission: "By harnessing the power of AI, we are pioneering game-changing insurance solutions and addressing the most pressing global challenges of today and tomorrow, from autonomous mobility and climate change to ageing populations".

The lab's focus on autonomous vehicles is particularly noteworthy, as the global autonomous vehicle market is projected to reach US$556.67bn by 2026,

Technical Advancements in Insurtech

The partnership between Oxford University and the Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford is poised to drive significant technical advancements in the insurtech sector. Machine learning algorithms, a key focus of the AIMS CDT, are already being applied to various insurance processes, from underwriting to claims management.

For instance, natural language processing (NLP) techniques are being employed to analyse unstructured data from diverse sources, including social media and IoT devices, to enhance risk assessment accuracy. Deep learning models are being developed to detect fraudulent claims with greater precision, potentially saving the industry billions in fraudulent payouts.

The application of computer vision in insurance is another area of rapid development. Advanced image recognition algorithms can assess vehicle damage from photographs, streamlining the claims process and reducing the need for in-person inspections. This technology is particularly relevant for the Aioi R&D Lab's work on autonomous vehicle insurance.

Furthermore, the lab's focus on detecting cognitive decline in older drivers leverages cutting-edge AI techniques in behavioural analysis and predictive modelling. By analysing driving patterns and cognitive function indicators, these systems can potentially identify at-risk drivers before accidents occur, enabling proactive interventions and more accurate risk pricing.

As Brian Mullins, CEO of Mind Foundry and Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford Board Member, states: "We are proud to continue this legacy of innovation by supporting AIMS students in their career journeys and utilising this Lab as a bridge that connects cutting-edge academic ideas with the world's most important problems".
