The latest movers and shakers in the world of insurtech

It’s time to round up some of the most significant new hires in insurance and insurtech – including notable appointments from Monzo, Aon, and Gallagher Re

Below, we look at some of the biggest movers and shakers from the world of insurtech over the past few months.

Phoebe Chibuzo Hugh

Phoebe Chibuzo Hugh

Job From: Venture CEO (Direct Line)

Job To: Head of Insurance (Monzo)

Phoebe Chibuzo Hugh has left Direct Line Group to take up a new role leading Monzo’s insurance business, as the UK challenger attempts to make a concerted push into the insurance space. Chibuzo Hugh started her career at Citi before spending three years at Aviva, including two years as the insurer’s Product & Proposition Manager.

But she is best known for being the founder of Brolly, a full-stack digital insurance brand focused on making insurance simple, personalised and affordable. Brolly exited to Direct Line Group in 2020 and Chibuzo Hugh transitioned into the Head of Product Innovation role, before becoming Venture CEO in July 2022.

In Monzo, she is joining a lively and exciting challenger bank that has amassed over 8 million customers since launching in 2015. Until now, though, the UK-based digital bank has failed to make significant inroads into insurance – something the appointment of Chibuzo Hugh will likely help address.

Previously named a Forbes 30 Under 30, she said there was “no better launchpad for the future of insurance than the UK’s favourite challenger bank” and looked forward to working with her new colleagues.

Todd Jones

Todd Jones

Job From: CEO (QBE North America)

Job To: EVP Risk Capital (Aon)

Aon has appointed Todd Jones, formerly CEO of QBE North America, as its new EVP of Risk Capital. A vastly experienced business leader, he holds an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business. He spent over 16 years in various senior roles at Willis Towers Watson – including as CEO of Willis North America, Head of Global Corporate Risk & Broking, and Co-Leader for North America. He left in 2019 to take up the role leading the regional business for QBE, a global insurance leader with almost US$5bn in gross written premiums (GWP) in North America alone.

Robert Alexander

Job From: Reinsurance Specialist (Miller)

Job To: Managing Director (Gallagher Re)

Miller’s Robert Alexander will join Gallagher Re early next year, bolstering its presence in the property retrocession and ILS space. He began his insurance career in 1990, specialising initially in marine treaty business before shifting towards property risk. He was MD of Alston Gayler (AG) until 2019, when he made the switch to Miller.

Paul Fitzgerald

Job From: Global Distribution Management Leader (Swiss Re Corporate Solutions)

Job To: COO (SRS)

Strategic Risk Solutions has named a COO ahead of the launch of Altitude, its new MGU focusing on ART solutions for corporate clients, which will launch in the first quarter of 2024. Paul Fitzgerald has spent almost eight years at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions and is described by SRS as “a tremendous asset”.

Bill Chval

Job From: General Manager (Metromile)

Job To: CRO (Openforce)

Openforce, an Arizona-based tech firm that supplies insurance and software to same-day logistics and delivery companies, has welcomed Bill Chval as its new Chief Revenue Officer. Bill brings “a wealth of experience, a passion for excellence and an innovative vision that aligns perfectly with Openforce's mission,” the company said.

Toby Harris

Job From: Technology Practice Leader Europe (Travelers)

Job To: Head of Technology, Middle Market Insurance (Sompo International)

Sompo International has appointed Toby Harris as Head of Technology for Middle Market Insurance as part of its UK P&C Insurance business. With over 30 years of industry experience behind him, Harris joins Sompo International from Travelers, where he served as Technology Practice Leader for Europe.
