Chinese insurtech giant Huize acquires majority stake in Vietnam's Global Care, leveraging AI and data analytics to provide solutions in the region

Huize Holding Limited, a leading Chinese insurtech company, has made a bold move to expand its presence in Southeast Asia through its international arm, Poni Insurtech.

With the recent acquisition of a controlling 71.7% stake in Global Care, a top-tier Vietnam-based insurtech platform, Huize is advancing its international expansion strategy. This acquisition, completed through a combination of existing share purchases and new shares, underscores Huize’s ambition to establish itself in rapidly growing insurance markets across the ASEAN region

Global Care, founded in 2017, has made significant developments in digitising insurance processes, facilitating 13.5 million policies on its platform in 2023 alone, with revenue quadrupling year-over-year.

Tech advancements

Huize has initiated collaboration with Global Care to boost market growth in Vietnam by focusing on innovative, customised insurance product development and distribution partnerships, along with advancements in platform technology and AI deployment. This move aligns with the trend of Chinese insurtech companies seeking growth opportunities beyond domestic markets, as they face regulatory hurdles and market saturation at home. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, has become a key target for expansion.

The Vietnamese insurance market, characterised by its young, digitally-native population of 100 million and robust economic growth projections, presents a particularly attractive opportunity.

Vietnam is an attractive emerging market for insurtech, characterised by a large, young, and digitally savvy population. Strong macroeconomic factors and foreign direct investment inflows are expected to drive significant GDP growth over the next decade, upping the market’s potential.

Global Care's integration into the Poni Insurtech ecosystem is expected to yield significant technological developments for both parties. Huize plans to leverage its advanced AI and data analytics capabilities to enhance Global Care's existing suite of cloud-based API solutions and mobile applications. These technologies are crucial in streamlining insurance processes, from sales and policy administration to claims processing.

The deal also involves a strategic investment from VinaCapital Ventures, the technology investment arm of VinaCapital Group, which received newly issued class A common shares of Huize, representing approximately 1.7% of the company's fully diluted share capital. This partnership is expected to provide local insights and resources, pushing Poni Insurtech's position in Vietnam's digital insurance ecosystem.

The integration of Global Care into Huize's operations is expected to create tangible value across the insurance value chain. By combining Huize's technological prowess with Global Care's local market knowledge, the partnership aims to revolutionise the insurance experience for end customers, insurance carriers, and distribution partners alike. As Huize consolidates its position in the Vietnamese market, the company is set to leverage its data-driven and AI-powered solutions to address the lifelong insurance needs of Vietnam's consumer base.

Southeast Asia's insurtech boom

The insurtech industry in Southeast Asia is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing digital adoption and a growing middle class. This burgeoning market has attracted significant investment and innovation, with companies like Huize Holding Limited and Global Care playing pivotal roles. Huize Holding Limited has a digital-first approach and focuses on millennials, aligning well with the region's tech-savvy population. Huize's success lies in its ability to offer personalised insurance products through its AI-powered platform, catering to the diverse needs of Southeast Asian consumers.

Meanwhile, Global Care, a Singapore-based insurtech firm, has been making waves with its innovative health insurance solutions. The company's digital platform enables seamless claims processing and provides access to a wide network of healthcare providers across the region.

Key trends shaping the Southeast Asian insurtech landscape include:
Microinsurance: Tailored, affordable policies for specific risks are gaining traction, particularly among lower-income segments.
Blockchain adoption: Insurers are leveraging blockchain technology to enhance transparency and streamline claims processing.
AI and machine learning: These technologies are being used to improve risk assessment, fraud detection, and customer service.
Partnerships: Collaborations between traditional insurers and tech startups are driving innovation and market penetration.
As the insurtech industry in Southeast Asia continues to evolve, companies like Huize and Global Care are well-positioned to capitalise on the region's growing demand for digital insurance solutions. Their success highlights the immense potential of the Southeast Asian market and the transformative power of technology in the insurance sector.
