Feather Targets European B2B Market with Business Insurance

Berlin-based insurance technology company Feather has launched its business insurance offering, targeting international companies that employ expatriate workers across Europe.
The move represents a shift from the company's original focus on individual expat insurance to serving corporate clients.
The new service addresses what the company identifies as gaps in Europe's commercial insurance market, particularly for businesses with internationally mobile workforces. Feather's business insurance platform covers life insurance, health insurance and pension insurance for company employees.
Health insurance represents a regulatory requirement for expat employees in most European jurisdictions, while life insurance requirements vary by country of residence. The inclusion of pension insurance forms part of Feather's value proposition, targeting what it describes as overlooked retirement savings opportunities for international workers.
"Businesses in Europe, especially small and mid-sized ones, often struggle to offer substantial insurance benefits," says Rob Schumacher, CEO and Co-founder at Feather.
"Their traditional insurance partners aren't built to support them, especially in pension insurance, where too often international employees miss out on thousands of euros, locked into high-fee products."
Targeting the expat workforce segment
The platform builds on Feather's existing consumer-focused infrastructure, which the company has developed since its founding.
The business product addresses what Feather characterises as the mobile nature of international workforces, offering insurance products that accommodate employee movement across European markets.
"Feather is a no-brainer for companies where expats make up at least 10% of the workforce," Schumacher says. The platform aims to reduce administrative burden for human resources departments by standardising processes across multiple European jurisdictions and languages.
"For HR teams, we're alleviating headaches with a solution that overcomes historical barriers associated with multi-lingual paperwork and understanding complex, local insurance obligations," Rob says.
"With a platform that transcends borders and languages – and offers insurance products tailored to the transient nature of expats – HR leaders can turn international onboarding into a warm welcome instead of a bureaucratic nightmare."
The company has appointed Nicolai Schieffer as head of B2B to lead the business expansion. Nicolai's role involves building relationships with HR departments and managing the transition from Feather's consumer-focused origins to serving corporate clients.
Expanding beyond employee benefits
Feather's business insurance offering extends beyond employee benefits to include professional liability, general liability and cybersecurity insurance products.
The cybersecurity component addresses compliance requirements under the EU's NIS-2 Cybersecurity Directive, which expanded the range of companies required to maintain cyber risk controls.
The directive, which came into effect across EU member states, requires organisations in critical sectors to implement cybersecurity measures and report incidents to national authorities.
Feather's cyber insurance product targets businesses seeking coverage for potential uninsured losses related to cyber incidents and other organisational risks.
"Feather's business launch is about solving relocation pain points upstream – at the employer level, where most insurance decisions are initiated," Nicolai says.
"Having earned the trust of thousands of expats navigating the German, French, and Spanish insurance systems, this is a strategic evolution from our B2C roots."
The business insurance launch follows Feather's expansion into France and Spain, with the appointments of Eloi Lanthiez and Jaime Sans Alvarez to oversee operations in those markets. The geographical expansion supports what the company describes as its broader European growth strategy.
Feather raised US$6m in funding in 2024, which the company has used to support its expansion from its original German market base.
The business insurance offering represents the company's attempt to capture corporate demand for expatriate workforce insurance across its operational territories.
The platform operates what Feather describes as a digital-first approach, contrasting with what it characterises as legacy systems used by traditional commercial insurers.
The company positions this technology-driven method as addressing compliance requirements while reducing bureaucratic processes for both employers and employees.
"On the other hand, the commercial insurance experience for most professionals starts and ends with an annual letter," says Rob. "We're retaliating against this experience."
