Aon's new insurance program covers data centres from construction to operations, tackling complex risks as AI and cloud computing demand surges

Global professional services giant Aon has unveiled its groundbreaking Data Centre Lifecycle Insurance Program (DCLP) – a comprehensive insurance solution that protects data centres from the ground up, literally from construction site to fully operational facility.

This isn't just another insurance product. The DCLP offers complete coverage under one umbrella, streamlining what has traditionally been a fragmented mess of different policies and providers.

"Today's data centres are the backbone of the global economy," explains James MacNeal, Aon's Global Industry Specialty Leader of Construction and Infrastructure. "Our Data Centre Lifecycle Insurance Program empowers clients to make better decisions, moving faster and more confidently, with protection that evolves alongside strategic assets, from physical infrastructure to digital operations."

And he's not wrong. As artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and our appetite for digital services explode, the stakes have never been higher. Data centres aren't just buildings with servers anymore – they're critical infrastructure that keeps our increasingly digital world spinning.

Tackling Complex Modern Risks

Here's where things get interesting. As global investment in digital infrastructure rockets skyward – driven by AI breakthroughs and insatiable demand for computing power – the risk landscape has become a minefield of complexity.

The DCLP tackles this head-on by bundling construction, cargo, cyber, and operational coverage into one coordinated programme. The result? Greater capital efficiency, faster project delivery, and rock-solid resilience across infrastructure projects.

By bringing together what used to be scattered across multiple insurers and policies, the DCLP slashes procurement headaches, speeds up project timelines, and gives investors the confidence they need to back ambitious data centre projects.

But Aon hasn't stopped there. The facility also incorporates cutting-edge risk engineering and cyber impact modelling, helping clients spot threats early and respond before they become disasters – covering both the physical buildings and the digital operations within them.

Key Features of the DCLP:
  • Up to US$1.5bn in coverage for Construction All Risks, Delay in Start-Up and Operational Property Damage/Business Interruption
  • Construction Cyber Physical Damage up to US$400m, including Construction Non-Damage Cyber and Operational Cyber and Tech E&O
  • Third-party liability coverage up to US$100m (excluding US exposures)
  • Project cargo and transport insurance up to US$500m
  • Integrated risk engineering and cyber impact modelling through Aon’s Global Risk Consulting team

More Than Just Buildings

The reality is that ensuring a robust data centre supply chain has become absolutely critical. Data centre clients need solutions that marry insurance protection with operational performance and stakeholder expectations seamlessly.

"Data centres are no longer just physical assets, they are platforms for innovation, connectivity and economic growth," says Brian Hearst, Managing Director of Construction for Aon. "DCLP reflects our commitment to helping clients shape better decisions, protect what matters most and build enduring infrastructure for a more digital world."

This programme helps clients navigate today's complex risk environment by consolidating coverage, providing insights earlier in the development process, and offering tools to prevent losses before they spiral out of control.

The DCLP launch showcases Aon's 3x3 Plan in action – their strategy to elevate client service standards while scaling innovation across Risk Capital and Human Capital capabilities.

The programme harnesses Aon's global expertise, extensive carrier relationships, and advanced analytics infrastructure to help clients tackle interconnected challenges with unprecedented clarity, confidence, and speed.

As data centres evolve into must-have assets for investors, operators, and builders alike, having a comprehensive insurance strategy has shifted from nice-to-have to absolutely essential for protecting company assets.

The complexity and risks – both physical and digital – that define today's data centre industry make detailed insurance coverage non-negotiable. This trend shows no signs of slowing, and will continue shaping the data centre market and the technologies powering it for years to come.

With the DCLP, Aon has created what could be the blueprint for how the industry protects its most critical infrastructure in our digital-first future.
