Methane Detection Fused With Insurance in World First

Strategic partnership has been announced between emissions data company Momentick and Sompo Japan Insurance, global provider of property, casualty and specialist insurance and reinsurance.
Also included is strategic risk management company Sompo Risk Management and global engineering firm JGC Corporation.
Local and international clients of Sompo Japan can now benefit from the solution, embracing the benefits of a methane detection solution integrated with insurance.
Daniel Kashmir, CEO and Co-founder of Momentick says: “We’re proud to contribute to this strategic partnership by bringing Sompo Japan clients our advanced frequent monitoring solution and actionable methane emission insights at a time when accountability and transparency are more critical than ever.”
"Sompo's approach shows how integrating emissions intelligence can strengthen the role of insurers in reducing risk and supporting environmental accountability in high-impact sectors."
The SaaS platform from Momentick analyses satellite imagery to identify precise locations around insured assets and measure the amount of methane emissions around them.
This in turn allows Sompo Japan to assess exposure to methane leaks which fuels its risk reports.
Toshiyuki Karasawa, Executive Officer and Senior General Manager of Process Technology Division at JGC Corporation says: “Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and the ability to detect and quantify it accurately is essential for meaningful climate action.
“By leveraging our on-site MRV expertise and project management capabilities with Sompo and Momentick, we’re delivering the robust data that companies and insurers can rely on to make smarter, faster decisions.”
Advanced solutions to assist in the climate crisis management
Sompo Japan also offers the option for companies looking for advanced solutions.
High-precision greenhouse gas (GHG) consultations and measurements, inclusive of ground-level measurements, are offered as part of the advanced solution option.
Additionally, companies can access drone based measurements provided by JGC Corporation.
“Helping our clients reduce emissions is essential to achieving our climate action goals,” comments Takahisa Nakamura, Director of Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.
“By offering advanced monitoring and methane detection as part of our risk management portfolio, we’re reducing environmental impact and risk exposure for our energy clients and standing behind our commitment to support a low-carbon economy through data-driven insurance solutions.”
he collaboration between Momentick, Sompo Japan, Sompo Risk and JGC Corporation aims to contribute towards a sustainable future.
With a climate-conscious business strategy, the collaboration commits to decarbonisation and methane emission reduction.
Insurers and energy clients can benefit from data-driven risk management to lower their GHG emissions.
Climate crisis
The partnerships come as part of a 2030 pledge to lower methane emissions by 20% in comparison to levels recorded in 2020.
Insurers such as Allianz have warned that climate change is threatening investments, destabilising financial frameworks and could also be affecting global housing and manufacturing sectors.
The increased frequency of storms, floods and heatwaves has already seen an impact on insurance losses in 2025.
Other insurance agencies have committed to introducing technology to assist insurers and reinsurers manage risk in catastrophic natural events.
Aon recently introduced its Events Analytics platform to assist in underwriting insurance in natural disasters.
Two recent reports published by Aon highlight the need for insurers to adapt technology to fit with current needs thanks to the increasing climate crisis which affects insurance rates and losses.
