Zurich Insurance partners with ETH Zurich and the University of St Gallen to launch its new AI Lab, accelerating digital innovation across the insurance

Zurich Insurance Group has announced the launch of the Zurich AI Lab, a joint initiative with the University of St Gallen and ETH Zurich’s Agentic Systems Lab.

The initiative is designed to accelerate digital transformation and explore how artificial intelligence can reshape the foundations of insurance.

Driven by Group CEO Mario Greco, the move marks one of Zurich’s most ambitious technological investments yet.

In a sector often seen as conservative, the AI Lab represents a decisive pivot towards an innovation-first model.

Mario said the new hub embodies Zurich’s commitment to challenge established practices.

“AI has proven its significant value by enabling us to better serve our customers, reduce response time, and deliver more accurate risk information,” he explains.

“The Zurich AI Lab is our moonshot factory, bringing together market-leading business and technology expertise and cutting-edge research with one clear goal: to revolutionise our business model and pioneer the next generation of insurance solutions.”

Combining business insight and academic depth

The Zurich AI Lab will bring together world-class academic capabilities and Zurich’s industry experience from bases in St. Gallen, Zurich, and Singapore.

The collaboration leverages the academic freedom of both universities with Zurich’s strategic intent to build scalable, responsible AI solutions.

Participation from the Institute of Management & Strategy at St. Gallen and ETH Zurich’s Agentic Systems Lab ensures interdisciplinary expertise.

Research will be led by PhD and Master’s students, supported by Zurich executives and renowned academics Professor Karolin Frankenberger from St Gallen and Professor Elgar Fleisch from ETH Zurich.

Karolin said she believes the partnership represents an opportunity to fuse deep research with commercial relevance.

“AI will radically transform the business model of the insurance industry,” she says.

She continues: “Building on our deep expertise and cutting-edge research in business model innovation and incumbent disruption at the University of St. Gallen, we are excited to collaborate with Zurich, driving transformation, advancing new research, and contributing to society through impactful knowledge, innovation, and partnerships.”

Elgar, who leads ETH Zurich’s contribution, said the rise of agentic AI technologies is particularly noteworthy.

“The latest developments in Agentic AI challenge us to rethink not only how we solve complex problems, but also how we organise and build the solutions themselves,” he notes.

“ETH Zurich students are at the forefront of this new wave, turning ideas into impactful real-world AI applications. This lab creates the bridge between this talent and a leading business to build what’s next.”

Zurich’s wider digital ambitions

Zurich’s AI Lab follows a series of digital investments by the group as it looks to strengthen its position in a fast-evolving insurance landscape.

Earlier this year, Zurich announced that it had appointed two new chiefs with broader aims of improving strategy in its use of AI.

The initiative builds on Zurich’s track record of deploying advanced predictive models across underwriting, claims automation, and customer engagement.

The insurer’s use of machine learning and data analytics has already delivered measurable efficiency gains and risk insights.

What sets the new AI Lab apart is its research-driven model, directly linking academic inquiry with industry challenges in real time.

The inclusion of St. Gallen’s business model innovation expertise and ETH Zurich’s technical depth creates an environment where AI applications are not developed in isolation but embedded within Zurich’s operational framework.

This approach positions Zurich to test, validate and scale AI prototypes faster than many of its global peers.

The road ahead

While Zurich’s investment underscores the growing influence of AI in the insurance sector, it also raises questions about ethical deployment and data governance.

The collaboration’s focus on responsible innovation reflects a broader conversation across insurtech circles about maintaining trust while advancing automation.

By aligning corporate objectives with academic insight, Zurich aims to create solutions that not only deliver competitive advantage but also set new standards for accountability.

If successful, the Zurich AI Lab could redefine how insurers engage with customers, assess risk, and structure their products globally.
