UK insurer Aviva is launching a first-of-its-kind application to provide rapid home insurance quotes through OpenAI’s conversational platform

Aviva is set to bridge the gap between Gen AI and traditional policy distribution with the launch of a new app on ChatGPT.

The tool is designed to streamline the front end of the insurance journey, allowing new customers to secure an initial home insurance quote in just a few minutes.

This initiative marks the first formal collaboration between the insurer and OpenAI following their recently announced partnership.

By merging OpenAI’s cutting edge Large Language Model (LLM) capabilities with Aviva’s deep data expertise, the app targets a growing demographic of users who are increasingly integrating AI into their daily administrative and shopping tasks.

Seamless integration with ChatGPT

Scheduled for release in the coming weeks, the app is accessible through ChatGPT’s app store.

Once users add the Aviva plugin to their interface, they can initiate a conversational workflow to determine their insurance needs.

The digital assistant will guide potential customers through a series of essential questions.

These include basic identifiers such as name, address and contact details, alongside specific requirements regarding the type of cover needed – whether that be buildings only, contents or a combined buildings and contents policy.

Based on this input, the app generates a real-time quote for the Aviva Signature Home Insurance product.

From conversation to conversion

While the AI handles the initial data gathering and pricing, the final transaction remains securely within Aviva’s regulated environment.

If a customer decides to proceed with the quoted price, a direct link transitions them from the ChatGPT interface to the Aviva website.

On the official site, customers can customise their policy by adding specified high value items, adjusting cover limits and selecting their preferred payment methods.

This handover ensures that users have a full opportunity to review all mandatory policy documentation and legal disclosures before completing the purchase.

Initially, the app will focus exclusively on Aviva’s Signature policy.

This focused rollout allows the firm to monitor user behaviour and refine the interface before potentially expanding the technology to other product lines.

A new frontier for distribution

The move signals a shift in how legacy insurers view distribution channels, moving beyond standard aggregators and brokers into the ecosystem of ambient AI.

Owen Morris, CEO Aviva UK Personal Lines, says: “Customers choose to buy their insurance in many different ways and this app will be a brilliant new addition to Aviva’s existing distribution channels, allowing more customers to access our products when and how they want.

“The app is simple to use, allowing customers to get a home insurance quote with just a few questions.

“We already compete strongly across all distribution channels, including direct, price comparison websites, brokers and partnerships, and this will now enable customers using LLMs to purchase from us.

“Although use of LLMs in financial services is relatively new, it’s likely we will see more customers adopting this purchase method as behaviour changes and LLMs become more commonplace.”
