American International Group appoints financial veteran Tom Stoddard to its Board of Directors to bolster its strategic growth and insurance expertise

American International Group (AIG) has announced the election of Thomas Stoddard to its Board of Directors as an independent Director.

Effective from 1 June 2026, Tom joins the insurance giant with more than 35 years of senior leadership experience across the financial services landscape, including significant tenures in asset management and investment banking.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for AIG as it continues to refine its global footprint.

Tom most recently served as Vice Chairman of Global Investment Banking at Bank of America, but it is his deep-rooted history within the insurance sector that marks him as a strategic hire for the board.

Peter Zaffino, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, AIG, says: “Tom’s deep expertise in property and casualty insurance and capital markets, together with his longstanding knowledge of AIG will be a very strong asset to our Board as we continue executing AIG’s strategic priorities and building on AIG’s momentum for the long term.”

A pedigree in insurance leadership

Stoddard’s career history reads like a map of the modern insurance industry. Before his time at Bank of America, Tom served as Group Chief Financial Officer of Aviva

This experience provided him with a granular understanding of the European regulatory environment and the complexities of managing a diverse, multi-line insurance portfolio.

Following his time at Aviva, Tom took on the role of Group Chief Financial Officer at Athora, a European life insurance company founded by Apollo Global Management.

His ability to navigate both the life and general insurance sectors provides AIG with a versatile perspective on risk and capital allocation.

John Rice, Lead Independent Director, AIG, notes: “Tom is a highly accomplished finance executive whose extensive background across financial services and the global insurance industry make him an excellent addition to the AIG Board of Directors.

“We look forward to leveraging his deep expertise in corporate governance and across the financial sector as we support AIG’s focus on delivering sustainable, long-term value for shareholders."

Strategic advisory and legal foundations

The relationship between Stoddard and AIG is not new. During his time at Blackstone, where he held the position of Senior Managing Director and Head of the Global Financial Institutions Group, Tom advised AIG and other global financial entities on complex deals and financing transactions.

This historical context is expected to streamline his integration into the board, as he already possesses an intimate understanding of the firm’s historical challenges and its recent structural shifts.

Tom adds: “Having worked very closely with AIG in the past, I am deeply honored to join the AIG Board of Directors and eager to contribute to the company’s continued success.

“The impressive work that led to AIG’s incredible transformation and the company’s positioning as a global market leader with a strong track record of outstanding performance is a compelling vision for the future that I look forward to supporting.”

Beyond his advisory work, Tom’s career began in the legal sector as a corporate lawyer with Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

This foundational legal knowledge combined with a decade in investment banking at UBS, Credit Suisse and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette ensures he brings a rigorous approach to corporate governance.
