MagMutual is leveraging AI & data analytics to provide insight into factors affecting healthcare outcomes & improve medical malpractice insurance

Medical malpractice insurance is essential for protecting healthcare professionals in an increasingly complex and regulated environment. MagMutual, a leading insurer, leverages innovation and physician-led governance to deliver proactive risk management and tailored support.

Founded by physicians more than forty years ago, the company now serves more than 40,000 healthcare providers and organisations nationwide. Its mission is clear – to protect and empower healthcare professionals in a world where risk, regulation and complexity are ever-increasing.

Meet the leadership defining medical malpractice insurance

As the healthcare sector evolves, so too must the insurers that support it. MagMutual’s executive team, including Chief Customer Officer Mark Poling, Chief Information Officer Vijay Yerraguntla and Chief Operating Officer Sallie Graves, are at the forefront of this transformation. Their vision? To harness AI, data analytics and workflow automation to redefine risk management, enhance operational excellence and deliver a customer experience that is proactive, personalised and deeply human.

Sallie, who leads innovation and operational alignment at MagMutual, describes her journey from software development in manufacturing to insurance technology leadership. “What really intrigued me about coming to MagMutual was that it is a mission-based company,” Sallie says. “I saw the opportunity to build something that was meaningful. It was already a great company, and I saw the vision of where they wanted to go as an organisation.”

Mark, who is responsible for the entire customer journey, is passionate about the company’s unique approach. “We really partner with our PolicyOwners,” Mark explains. “Our advice function is an example of where we can partner with them and improve their lives and the lives of their patients and medical outcomes. To me, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Vijay, who brings nearly three decades of technology leadership to the role of CIO, sees medical malpractice insurance — often called “medmal” — as a sector ripe for reinvention. “The intersection of large volumes of historic data, combined with modern technology, creates a unique opportunity for innovation,” she says.

For MagMutual, innovation is not about technology for technology’s sake. It is about transforming the very nature of insurance — shifting from reactive claims handling to proactive risk management, from manual processes to intelligent automation and from generic coverage to personalised, data-driven support.

Understanding the unique challenges of medmal

Medical malpractice insurance is one of the most tightly regulated lines of coverage. Physicians and healthcare organisations face mounting pressures: declining reimbursements, increased administrative burdens and a web of compliance requirements. Insurance, meanwhile, is a business of trust — customers hope they never need to use it, but when they do, the consequences are significant.

Vijay recognises the challenge of modernising legacy systems while preserving that trust. “You’re dealing with a complex  and risk-averse industry as a whole,” she says. “But at the same time, the demand for digital simplicity and speed is very high.”

MagMutual’s solution is to focus on  developing solutions in partnership with policyholders and ensuring robust data standards. “We address this by focusing on co-creation with our customers in a very transparent way, ensuring strong data governance along the way, so that any type of technology, AI and automation efforts are trusted and scalable,” Vijay says.

Sallie adds that rapid growth brings its own challenges. “We’re becoming more complex, so we’re focused on really trying to make sure that we’re able to support our customers on a daily basis and be there for their needs from a service perspective,” she says.

“We’re  also  moving forward with our strategic goals and the innovation that we want to bring to the table – making sure that both of those are complementary to each other, and that we’re continuing to be able to take advantage of these advancements that we see in technology to support our PolicyOwner. We’re working to not only impact the experience they’re having today but make it better for tomorrow.”

Mark believes the biggest challenge is changing mindsets. “When you buy insurance, it’s something you hope you never have to use,” he explains. “Sometimes we need to change our PolicyHolders’ mindset, so that they recognise that we’re truly a partner. We’re here not just to provide insurance in the event that something goes wrong, but to provide proactive resources and tools to keep them out of that situation in the first place.”

Physician-led insurance and innovation

MagMutual’s physician-led governance is at the heart of its approach.

“MagMutual was founded over four decades ago by physicians and we’ve grown into one of the largest medical professional liability insurers in the United States,” Sallie explains. “We’re headquartered in Atlanta. We serve over 40,000 healthcare providers and organisations nationwide and offer a comprehensive suite of insurance products.”

But MagMutual’s offerings extend far beyond traditional malpractice coverage. “At its core, MagMutual is committed to protecting and empowering healthcare professionals,” Sallie continues. “That’s why we offer customised advice, exceptional claim support and consistent financial benefits.”

The company’s physician-led governance ensures that every decision is made in the policyholders’ best interest.

“It’s our number one precept,” Sallie says. “Our evolution has been marked by continuous innovation and initiatives with our products and services that really demonstrate the focus on our PolicyOwners.”

How are AI and data analytics transforming medmal?

The real engine of MagMutual’s transformation is its embrace of AI and advanced data analytics. These technologies are reshaping how the company manages risk, automates workflows, and delivers a more personalised customer experience.

“AI analytics have really shifted how we operate,” Vijay says. “Instead of reacting to issues after they happen, we are now able to anticipate them and act before they escalate, which is so useful for our PolicyOwners.”

This proactive approach is made possible by blending structured data—such as claims histories—with unstructured sources like call logs and transcripts. “This combination helps us identify early risk signals, triage more effectively and tailor support to each of our customers’ individual needs,” Vijay explains.

AI enables MagMutual to improve the way it handles underwriting submissions. “AI is helping us process submissions faster. But it’s not just about speed. It also captures the nuanced risk factors that really matter in medmal,” Vijay says. “We are not only just making the decisions faster – we are making them smarter, too.”

The real power of data lies in the quality of decisions it enables. By connecting claims data, underwriting inputs, and even call transcripts, MagMutual can identify patterns that would otherwise remain hidden. “For example, by analysing claims data alongside policyholder demographics and historical underwriting notes, we are able to identify some of the emerging risk trends like a spike in certain types of procedures or some regional claims patterns,” she reveals.

These insights allow MagMutual to price risk more accurately and to engage with policyholders before a claim ever occurs. “That’s when data becomes truly transformative — when it drives smarter and more human-centred decisions at scale,” Vijay says.

Workflow automation: From efficiency to excellence

Workflow automation is another pillar of MagMutual’s innovation strategy. By automating routine processes, the company can deliver faster, more consistent service while freeing up staff to focus on higher-value activities.

Sallie explains that automation is about more than efficiency. “We have a growing portfolio of digital and data-driven capabilities,” she says. “So we really are continuing to lead the way in transforming how risk is managed in healthcare.”

For example, automating claims intake and processing not only speeds up resolution times but also reduces the risk of human error. Automated alerts can flag potential issues before they become claims, allowing MagMutual to intervene early and support its policyholders proactively.

“We do more than your typical insurance company,” Mark says. “We’re here not just to provide insurance in the event that something goes wrong, but to provide proactive resources and tools to keep them out of that situation in the first place.”

Automation also extends to the customer experience. Self-service portals and digital communication tools streamline policy management, making it easier for healthcare professionals to access support, file claims and receive advice when they need it most.

Social determinants of health: The next frontier in risk management

One of the most innovative areas of MagMutual’s work is its focus on the relationship between social determinants of health, suboptimal patient outcomes, and malpractice risk.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. Factors such as income, education, housing and access to care can have a profound impact on health outcomes — and, by extension, on the likelihood of adverse events that may lead to malpractice claims.

MagMutual is using data analytics to explore these connections. By analysing claims data alongside demographic and socioeconomic information, the company can identify patterns that point to higher risk. For example, certain communities may experience more frequent adverse outcomes due to barriers in access to care or communication challenges.

“By combining claims data with policyholder demographics and social factors, we can see patterns that wouldn’t be visible in isolation,” Vijay says. “This helps us identify emerging risk trends and intervene earlier.”

This approach not only improves risk management but also supports MagMutual’s broader mission of empowering healthcare professionals. By understanding the root causes of malpractice risk, the company can offer targeted advice and resources to help policyholders improve patient outcomes.

Mark expands on this, noting that MagMutual’s risk management advice team is redefining how information and guidance are delivered to physicians. “We’re focused on meeting our physicians where they are, in their workflows, decision support tools, in their EHR systems,” he says. “That means not just responding to claims, but helping our policyholders understand and address the underlying factors that can lead to adverse outcomes.”

Empowering physicians through proactive partnership

The human side of digital transformation is a key consideration for MagMutual. Despite the focus on technology, the company’s leaders are keenly aware that insurance is ultimately a people business. The goal is not to replace human judgement, but to augment it with better data and smarter tools.

“Our evolution has been marked by continuous innovation and initiatives with our products and services,” Sallie explains. “They really demonstrate the focus on our PolicyOwners.”

Vijay echoes this sentiment: “We are not just insuring risks. We are protecting physicians and healthcare providers who serve our communities every day.”

For Mark, the most rewarding aspect is helping to reduce the burden on healthcare professionals. “Being able to provide them tools and resources that take some of that stress and burden away is really rewarding,” he says.

MagMutual’s journey is far from over. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the company remains focused on leading through innovation — always with the needs of its policyholders at the centre.
